Some of our tests include a free testosterone result. Free testosterone is rarely measured directly. Instead, it is calculated using your total testosterone level and the amount of testosterone bound to proteins in your blood.
To calculate your free testosterone level, the laboratory uses your measurements of:
- Total testosterone
- Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG)
- Albumin
These results are used in a validated formula to calculate the amount of testosterone that is freely available in your bloodstream.
