Can temperature affect my blood sample?
Extreme hot or cold temperatures can affect blood samples. If a sample is exposed to direct sunlight for a length of time, reaches below freezing or temperatures above 36 degrees there is a chance the sample may be spoilt.
How should I store and post my sample?
Once your sample is collected, store it in a cool, dark place until it is time to post (but do not refrigerate). We recommend you post your sample as close as you can to your post office or post box collection time.
What if my sample is spoilt?
If your sample is affected by extreme temperatures, do not worry. We will get in touch to arrange a repeat test if it is necessary.
There are some markers, such as haematocrit (HCT), that are more sensitive to temperature changes. Our clinicians are aware of this and will take it into consideration when reviewing your results. They may advise a retest if necessary.
What if I need to take my sample on a specific day or time?
At Leger we give you a ‘due date’ to take your sample on which is based off when your last test was taken, or the clinician’s recommendation. We recommend you collect your sample as close to this day are you can.
Still keep to the advice in your special instructions which specify the time of day your sample should be taken, and in relation to when your treatment was administered.
